Interstate 95 Master Plan

Project Description

Interstate 95 (I-95) is the primary north-south limited-access highway on Floridas Atlantic coastline, providing linkage between numerous metropolitan areas including: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Jacksonville. Within northeast Florida, I-95 forms the north-south spine through St. Johns and Duval Counties. This facility is the major means by which goods and people move north-south within the region, within the state, and to other parts of the United States. Recognizing this important mobility role, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) prepared an Interstate Master Plan (IMP) in 1990, outlining future improvement strategies so that I-95 could continue serving as the regions key transportation facility. In 2005, the FDOT embarked on updating the IMP so that strategies could be aligned with current conditions.

Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of the I-95 IMP Update is to revisit the findings of the 1990 IMP in light of the changes over the last 15 years. For this 2009 update, the study limits extend from the St. Johns/Flagler County line to Interstate 10, as shown in Figure 1-1, for a length of 54.2 miles. The final recommended set of mobility enhancements need to: be based on updated data; be consistent with local, regional agency, and state plans; and guide future transportation decisions by providing short term and long term implementation strategies.The update followed a study process which: considered the current setting by using updated data; developed a set of design and mobility criteria; and developed and evaluated a set of conceptual enhancement alternatives. This process led to an updated set of recommended mobility enhancements for this segment of I-95.
